The Saturday Morning. Today is a Saturday morning. I am sitting in the living room of my apartment, which I share with two other people. They're awake and I see one of them right now. It's Nick, my 28 years old American roommate. He is wearing nothing but shorts. He is sitting in front of me, right on the floor, and trying to fix his bike. He's a sportsman. Tomorrow he is going to compete, and now he wants to be sure that his bike works perfectly. He takes off every little detail and oils it. From time to time he looks at me. He doesn't know that I am writing about him. Though, even if he knew that, he wouldn't mind because he likes when people watch him working. Nick is quietly humming along with the music when I am moving in our dining room. I am going to observe my second roommate whose name is Sissay. Sissay is preparing breakfast in the kitchen and I can easily see him. He's dressed up in such a way that you might think that our apartment is a public place. He always looks perfect and I wonder how he does it. Sissay is from Ethiopia and, though he is 32 years old, he behaves like a child. He is very friendly and laughs all the time. Being with someone without any conversation is impossible for him. So, he immediately starts to speak to me. "What are you doing, Max?" He asked me. "I am writing an essay about you and Nick," I answered. "What kind of essay is that?" He said curiously. I explain to him that I want to write everything I observe right now. Sissay asks me to read him aloud the written material but I don't want to do it. I just keep on writing. "Let's eat Max!" I hear him again. Sissay (unlike Nick) always invites us to share his food with him even when he does not really mean it. His culture makes him do it. I said that I have eaten and Sissay is heading to the living room to call Nick for breakfast. A minute later both of them appear in the dining room. They eat vegetable salad and talk about recent news. Sissay is telling us about his Spanish language classes that he attends this fall. "Six month from now I am going to know Spanish like my own language!" He says boastfully and starts laughing. Nick and I are also laughing because we know that it is never going to happen. Last year Sissay was attending piano classes and in spite of his words did not become a professional piano player. Actually he did not become any player at all. This is the reason why all of us are laughing right now. "What are you writing all the time Max?" Nick asks me in turn. "He is writing an essay about you and me!" Sissay answers instead of me. "Must be something subversive!" Nick says. "It is very probable 'cos he does not want to read it to me," Sissay says. "Hey Max!" Nick yells, "You have to clean the kitchen today, bro!" "I know!" I answer, "And you make sure that all dirty dishes will get cleaned before I start!" "O.K." Nick says and goes to the kitchen. He is washing the dishes. Sissay takes out a cigarette and starts smoking.
